Commitee Work

Part of my work in Ottawa includes sitting on two Parliamentary Committees. I currently sit on the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration (CIMM) as well as the Standing Committee on the Status of Women (FEWO).

Mandate

The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration examines orders of reference that the House of Commons refers to it. Orders of reference may relate to bills, Estimates or order-in-council appointments. The Committee may also study issues of its own choosing.

In addition, the Committee studies and reports on all matters relating to the mandate, management and operation of Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) and the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB).

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(b) of the House of Commons, the mandate of CIMM also includes the monitoring of the implementation of the principles of the federal multiculturalism policy throughout the Government of Canada.

Mandate

The Standing Committee on the Status of Women was created for the first time in the 38th Parliament in 2004. While this is the first Standing Committee on the Status of Women, a Subcommittee on the Status of Women (under the Committee on Health and Welfare, Social Affairs, Seniors and the Status of Women) existed during the 34th Parliament.

Under Standing Order 108(1), the House of Commons refers matters to the Committee for examination and report. This Order also authorizes the Committee to create subcommittees to focus on particular subjects. Standing Order 108(2) gives the Committee broad authority to study the policies, programs, expenditures and legislation of departments and related agencies, including the Status of Women Canada, relating to the status of women.
